2022 State Championship Wrap-up
Jack Moran, ISCA President
This year’s state championship was by all measures a big success. Hosted by The Sporting Club at The Farm in New Albany, Indiana, the 2022 State Sporting Clays Championship set a record for participates, despite being held over the July 4th holiday weekend. A total of 237 shooters participated, with a record 195 shooters in the two-day Main Event.
Our state champion this year was Bryan Wright from Fishers, Indiana, who was also our state champion in 2018. Dalton Oliver (Kentucky) won the HOA Award and Mark Hall (Kentucky) was HOA Runner Up.
The 2022 state shoot utilized a large part of the expansive 700 acres making up The Farm. The courses were laid out in such a way as to minimize delays and maximize the unique terrain features found at the club. The Side Events course, located in a densely wooded section of the club, featured 8 stations which improved the flow and the enjoyment for our shooters. The unique setting of the 5-Stand, shooting out over water with floating traps was something we rarely see, and the ever-popular Make A Break was once again a big hit with the shooters.
Past National Champion Bill McGuire was the target setter for the event. He provided us with challenging, yet very fair targets, that were a pleasure to experience. Bill told me he set the courses so that every target could be broken with an IC choke, which I totally believe.
I’d like to thank all our sponsors of this year’s event, especially Malcolm Frost for delivering Stifel Nicholas once again as our title sponsor. The donation from our sponsors helps fund prizes, awards, and our annual dinner each year. Our state shoot would not be what it is without their continued support.
A special thanks goes out to Bobby and Lori Brooks and their dedicated staff. They worked for months on preparations for this year’s shoot, and their efforts showed. Their club was in perfect shape and will be a venue we hope to use for years to come.
The ISCA was planning on having Sugar Creek Sporting Clays host next year’s championship, but after recently learning about the total lack of overnight accommodations in the area next year, caused by some quite unique circumstances, has caused us to move the venue to Indiana Gun Club in Fortville, Indiana. Be sure to mark your calendars for next year’s state championship which will be held July 27th – July 30th.
